Strasbourg Christmas Market Hotels: Our Best Tips (and Mistakes to Avoid)

The Strasbourg Christmas Market (the Christkindelsmärik, late November - late December) attracts 2 million visitors. Hotels are the most expensive in France during this period — an average 3* hotel goes from €90 to €280 per night. Here's how to keep the magic without breaking the bank.

When to book your hotel for the Christmas market?

Ideally between March and June for the following December. The best establishments are booked 9 to 10 months in advance. From September onwards, essentially only peripheral hotels over €200/night remain.

Which days are the cheapest?

DayPrice Level
Friday⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High
Saturday⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High
Sunday evening⭐⭐ Lower
Monday - Wednesday⭐⭐ The Smart Choice

> 💡 The trick that works: come Sunday to Wednesday. You can enjoy all the chalets, fewer crowds, and hotels are 30 to 50% cheaper.

Which areas to aim for?

  • Grande Île / Historic Centre: magical but the most expensive. Noisy on weekends.
  • Petite France: calmer, a 10-minute walk from the chalets, canal views.
  • Krutenau / University: 15-minute walk, 25-30% cheaper.
  • Station Quarter: convenient for TGV, lower prices but less charming atmosphere.

To avoid for magic: hotels in Schiltigheim, Illkirch, the airport — really far once the tram stops running.

The clever option: Colmar or Obernai

If everything in Strasbourg is fully booked or out of budget, Colmar (35 min by train) and Obernai (30 min) also have sumptuous Christmas markets and hotels that are 2 to 3 times cheaper. Basing yourself in Colmar and going to Strasbourg for a day is a strategy many Alsatians use themselves.

The Resapass 25% to 40% off trick

Independent hotels in Strasbourg and Alsace offer a system of negotiated rates for travel clubs. Resapass lists over 70 hotels in Alsace, including about thirty in Strasbourg itself.

For a 4* boutique hotel in Grande Île advertised at €320/night in December, the Club rate often drops to €210-€240 — saving €200 on 2 nights. The pass pays for itself from the first booking.

Recap: the anti-nasty surprise checklist

  1. Book before June for December.
  2. Aim for Sunday-Wednesday, not Friday-Saturday.
  3. Hotel less than a 15-minute walk from the chalets.
  4. Check the free cancellation policy: the weather can change a weekend.
  5. If Strasbourg is full, Colmar does the job.
  6. For 4* hotels in the city centre, Resapass makes all the difference.
