How to pay less for your hotel: 12 tips that really work
Comparison sites, negotiated rates, booking at the right time, payment hacks, loyalty programmes... the complete guide to saving on every hotel night.

1. Compare 3 OTAs, not just one
Booking, Hotels.com and Expedia don't always have the same price for the same room. A difference of 8–15% is common.
2. Book on the right day of the week
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are statistically the days when prices drop the most, especially for a stay 6 to 8 weeks later.
3. Aim for the negotiated rate, not the visible discount
A 10% Genius discount on a public price is not the same as a private negotiated price by a hotel club. Clubs like Resapass offer rates 18% to 44% lower than Booking.
4. Avoid periods of extreme dynamic pricing
Sunday evening + major business cities = highest prices. Shift by one night, the price can drop by 30%.
5. Log in using incognito mode
OTAs sometimes personalise prices based on your recent searches.
6. Activate price alerts
Google Hotels and Kayak allow you to track a specific hotel and be notified of a price drop.
7. Book non-refundable… only if you're sure
Non-refundable rates are 10–20% cheaper.
8. By phone, sometimes
For a stay of more than 4 nights in an independent hotel, a direct call may secure a better price than online.
9. Premium credit cards
Some cards (American Express Platinum, Visa Infinite) provide access to hotel programmes — upgrades, complimentary breakfast, late check-out.
10. Combine hotel chain + OTA loyalty
At a hotel chain (Accor, Marriott, IHG), booking direct earns you free nights.
11. Shift your arrival by one day
A check-in on Sunday instead of Friday can halve the average rate over 3 nights.
12. Join a hotel club
This is the tip that changes everything for frequent travellers. From 2 to 3 nights per year, membership (~€99/year with Resapass) is largely recouped.
Verdict
Tips 1 to 11 each save 5 to 15%. Tip 12 changes the order of magnitude — a systematic 20 to 30%. Combined, you can pay 30% to 50% less for the same hotel.
